WATERSHED APPROACH IN IMPROVING THE SOCIOECONOMIC-STATUS OF TRIBAL AREA - A CASE-STUDY

In watershed development project at Peepalwas of Udaipur district, soil and water conservation works were done in an area of 86.29 ha. After the implementation for five rems (1988-89 to 1992-93) the project was evaluated in terms of conservation and development of resources and increase in productivity. The watershed management programme has not only increased the crop yield but also developed fodder resources in the area. The per capita income has gone up from Rs.598 to Rs.1739 and the average benefit-cost ratio. worked out to be 1.76:1 which indicates the economic feasibility of watershed management programme for improving the socio-economic status of farmers residing in the tribal area.
